Every year the C2C Café organizes a number of seminars to bring together and inform professionals about current sustainability issues in the real estate sector. Last month the seminar took place in the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven with the subject: Cradle to Cradle, Circular buildings and Material Passports. Our colleagues Hein van Tuijl (EPEA - part of Drees & Sommer) and Michael Moradiellos del Molino (Drees & Sommer Belgium) updated the participants on the subject during the meeting.
Positive impact on the world
The sustainable and innovative services of partners EPEA and Drees & Sommer are increasingly reaching the real estate market. EPEA is the founding organisation behind the Cradle to Cradle® concept. EPEA works on developing products, buildings and services that have a positive impact on people and the environment. In addition, EPEA leads the international development of tools and application methods that accelerate the transition to a circular economy based on Cradle to Cradle® principles. Together with Drees & Sommer, the focus lies on developing products and tools to achieve a circular real estate and construction industry.
Hein and Michael informed the audience about developed progressive instruments including the Materials Passport and the Building Material Scout (BMS). These instruments lead to C2C-certified materials and products that can be used during (new) construction and renovation projects. With the European project Buildings As Material Banks (BAMB) EPEA tested the Materials Passport for more than 400 products.
The transformation of the WTC in Brussels into a circular building is a striking example. The demand for digitized data for building owners is increasing. Brussels is at the forefront of the ZIN project, the redevelopment of the World Trade Centre 1 and 2 with a total surface area of 110,000 m². ZIN will be fully integrated into the urban ecosystem and will be open to the city. It is a highly innovative project, both in terms of architecture and sustainability. Particularly in terms of (near) energy neutrality and circularity.
More and more parties are contributing to a circular economy. This has resulted in valuable collective initiatives. The Cradle to Cradle Café is one of those initiatives, a collaboration between Ahrend, Mosa, QbiQ and Tarkett who develop their products according to the C2C principles and want to spread the philosophy.
Our market is looking for solutions for the realization of a circular built environment. The synergy between EPEA and Drees and Sommer is promising, working hard on concrete solutions for our clients. After all, buildings that make a positive contribution to the environment and our health are a collective interest.
